Infotalk about the solidarity campaign “Free the Röszke11 – Solidarity
with the imprisoned refugees in Hungary!”
In September 2015 Hungary sealed off its border to refugees arriving via
the so-called Balkanroute. Thousands of people became stranded at the
Hungarian fence; days of protests and conflicts with Hungarian border
guards followed. During the clashes, the Hungarian police arbitrarily
arrested 11 people and accused them of ‘illegal border crossing’,
‘participation in mass riots’ and ‘terrorism’ (in Ahmad H.’s case). The
accused have been charged with 1 to 10 years in prison. The prosecutor
as well as the defense lawyers appealed the sentences. The processes are
therefore continuing on the second level of court. A transnational
solidarity alliance is calling for the release of the imprisoned and is
supporting them locally.
The Röszke 11 case shows clearly that refugees who do not behave like
victims that need saving – but claim and demonstrate for their rights –
are systematically criminalised. But Hungary should not be seen as an
exception; in other European countries as well refugees who dare to
protest have trials running against them. All over Europe the current
discourse on ‘security’ and on states’ right to protect their borders is
dominant. What does it mean when refugee-protests are constructed as
acts of terrorism? What can we learn from the current developments in
Hungary, where the far-right Fidesz party is already the ruling party?
There, the last rights that refugees have are being suspended, civil
society is intimidated and solidarity-activists criminalised.
On June 15th there will the second-level trial against Ahmed H. in
Szeged/Hungary. During the info talk, we will inform about the ongoing
trials & the solidarity campaign and we will discuss the current
developments in Hungary.

Veranstaltung: Vortrag über die Soldiartiätskampagne “Free the Röszke11”
Im September 2015 schloss Ungarn seine Grenzen für Flüchtlinge, die über die sog. Balkanroute kamen. Tausende Menschen strandeten an den ungarischen Zäunen; Tage des Protests und der Auseinandersetzung mit ungarischen Grenzschützer*innen folgten. Während der Auseinandersetzungen verhaftete die ungarische Polizei 11 Personen, mit dem Vorwurf “illegaler Grenzüberschreitung”, “Teinahme an Ausschreitungen” und “Terrorismus” (im Fall Ahmad H.). Die Angeklagten wurden zu 1-10 Jahre Gefängnis verurteilt. Sowohl Staatsanwaltschaft, als auch Verteidigung fochten das Urteil an. Deswegen werden die Prozesse in der nächsthöhreren Instanz weitergeführt. Eine transnationale Solidaritätsallianz fordert die Entlassung der Inhaftierten und unterstützt sie vor Ort.
Der Röszke 11 Fall zeigt klar, dass Geflüchtete, die sich nicht wie Opfer verhalten, die Rettung brauchen, sondern ihre Rechte einfordern und dafür demonstrieren, systematisch kriminalisiert werden. Ungarn darf dabei aber nicht als Ausnahme betrachtet werden; in anderen europäischen Ländern wurden Geflüchtete, die es wagten zu protestieren, angeklagt. Überall in Europa dominiert im Moment der Diskurs über Sicherheit und das Recht der Staaten ihre Grenzen zu schützen. Was bedeutet es, wenn Flüchtlingsproteste als Terrorismus konstruiert werden? Was können wir von den aktuellen Entwicklungen Ungarns lernen, wo die rechtsradikale Fidesz bereits die herrschende Partei ist ?
Am 15. Juni wird der nächstinstanzliche Prozess gegen Ahmed H. in Szeged/Ungarn geführt. Während der Infoveranstaltung werden wir über die Prozesse und die Solidaritätsarbeit informieren und über die aktuelle Situation in Ungarn diskutieren.
